1. Tại sao nên viết câu dài trong IELTS WRITING
IELTS là kì thi đánh giả khả năng ngôn ngữ của thí sinh. Nếu thí sinh, mặc dù tiếng Anh tốt, chỉ viết ngắn, nói ngắn, người chấm thi sẽ không có cơ sở đánh giá được khả năng ngôn ngữ của họ. 

Vì vậy, những người thi IELTS luôn cố gắng viết hoặc nói dài để có “đất” thể hiện được hết vốn từ vựng và ngữ pháp của bản thân.
Bên cạnh đó, việc viết câu ghép sẽ làm bài văn mạch lạc có hệ thống hơn là viết toàn câu đơn nhát gừng.

2. Có phải lúc nào cũng nên viết câu dài?
Tránh việc lạm dụng quá mức, vì một câu nếu quá dài 4 mệnh đề trở lên, quá nhiều thông tin sẽ có rủi ro bị lủng củng, dẫn đến người đọc không biết đâu mới là ý chính, từ đó lại phản tác dụng.

II. Cách viết IELTS WRITING Task 2 không thiếu chữ

1. Kéo dài bài văn bằng cách tác động vào bố cục đoạn văn

1.1 Giải thích kĩ hơn thông tin vừa viết (bổ sung supporting idea)

• Tức là thay vì viết Main idea > Supporting idea với chỉ 1 câu Supporting idea thôi, có thể viết thêm 1 supporting idea nữa giải thích kĩ hơn nữa cho main idea vẫn được
• Lưu ý là phải hợp lí, tránh lê thê. 

1.2. Cho ví dụ
Giả sử bài viết đang tầm 250 từ thì để kéo dài bài viết lên 300 từ, chỉ cần viết thêm 1 ví dụ nữa là sẽ vừa làm bài thêm thuyết phục, vừa kéo dài bài ra nhé. 

2. Kéo dài bài văn bằng cách viết câu dài

2.1. Kéo dài câu bằng cách giải thích thêm thông tin
Chúng ta có thể thêm một vài thông tin vào để người đọc nắm được những ý cụ thể hơn.

• Fossil fuels are bad
• “Fossil fuels” có thể cụ thể ra hơn nữa bằng việc đưa ra fossil fuels bao gồm coal, oil and natural gas, etc.
• “bad” cho ai/ cái gì? → bad for the environment.
• Vậy chúng ta sẽ có được một câu như sau: Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, are bad for the environment.
• Advertising is important.
• “Advertising" có thể bao gồm advertisements and commercials.
• “important” cho ai/cái gì? → important for both the consumers and the producers.

Vậy chúng ta sẽ có được một câu như sau:  Advertising, in the form of advertisements and commercials, is important for both the consumers and the producers.
A student has to devote a lot of time and effort to his or her study in order to get a university qualification

Câu kéo dài bằng cách bổ sung thêm thông tin "để làm gì": A student has to devote a lot of time and effort to his or her study in order to get a university qualification, which can somehow prove that this student is a hard-working and persevering person.

2.2. Kéo dài câu bằng cách Paraphrase các cụm ngắn thành cụm dài & diễn tả ý chi tiết hơn

• Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, are bad for the environment.
• Fossil fuels không tốt cho môi trường chưa cụ thể hoá là chất gì→ fossil fuel consumption sẽ tốt hơn.
• Consumption như thế nào? → regular
• Fossil fuels có thể paraphrase được không? → Non-renewable energy sources
• “bad” → to have detrimental effects on
• “environment” vẫn có thể cụ thể hoá hơn nữa → especially the air quality

Vậy chúng ta sẽ có một câu như sau: Regular consumption of non-renewable energy sources, such as coal, oil and natural gas, can have detrimental effects on the environment, especially the air quality.

2.3. Kéo dài câu bằng cách dùng Mệnh đề quan hệ (Relative clause)

Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, are bad for the environment.
Câu kéo dài: Fossil fuels, which include coal, oil and natural gas, can have detrimental effects on the environment, especially the air quality.

From 2010 to 2015, the number of car users rose quickly while the number of bus users declined slightly.
Câu kéo dài: From 2010 to 2015, the number of people who drove (driving) to work rose quickly (experienced a quick rise) while the number of people who travelled by bus declined slightly.

Take Hoi An, as an example. 
Câu kéo dài: Take Hoi An, which is one of the most famous ancient cities in Vietnam, as an example.

2.4. Kéo dài câu bằng cách nối các câu đơn thành câu ghép & câu phức (sử dụng liên từ)

Ví dụ: While, Whereas
Petrol and oil are the primary power sources in this country throughout the period shown while the least used power sources are nuclear and renewable energy

Ví dụ: However, But, Nevertheless
Ann had been living in the village of England for over a decade. Nevertheless, the villagers still considered her to be an outsider.

2.5. Kéo dài câu bằng cách thêm các thành tố để diễn đạt cụ thể hơn
Ban đầu, sẽ viết ra 1 câu đơn để làm cho câu văn được dài hơn, có thể thêm các thành phần như trạng từ, tính từ, danh từ hay 1 cụm giới từ vào câu gốc. 

Điều này sẽ làm cho câu văn của thí sinh trở nên chi tiết hơn và thuyết phục hơn.

Ví dụ 
Customers are faced with advertisements.

2.5.1 THÊM TRẠNG TỪ - ADVERB:
Customers are frequently/ usually/ hardly faced with advertisements.
Ngoài ra, cũng có thể thêm một số trạng từ chỉ đặc điểm, cách thức: Customers are faced with advertisements pervasively

2.5.2 THÊM TÍNH TỪ - ADJECTIVE:
Customers are frequently faced with unreliable and misleading advertisements.

2.5.3 THÊM DANH TỪ - NOUN HOẶC HẠN ĐỊNH TỪ - DETERMINER
Most customers are frequently faced with many unreliable and misleading advertisements.

2.5.4 THÊM GIỚI TỪ - PREPOSITION:
Có thể thêm cụm giới từ chỉ nơi chốn (place) hoặc thời gian (time): Most customers are frequently faced with many unreliable and misleading advertisements on television.

2.5.5. Cụ thể hoá danh từ với sở hữu cách
Thay vì chỉ gọi tên danh từ, gắn một sở hữu nào đấy cho danh từ để cụ thể hoá đối tượng sở hữu danh từ đó

• Smoking is bad for people's health.
• Playing sports is good for children's health.

2.6. Kéo dài câu bằng cách hạn chế dùng cấu trúc ngắn mà sử dụng các cấu trúc phức tạp hơn

• instead of - rather than

These days, due to busy work schedules, parents often take their offspring to KFC or McDonald's instead of preparing healthy meals at home for them.

Many of today's teenagers tend to devote a large amount of time to screen-time leisure activities rather than outdoor sports such as football, which adversely affects their health.
